Description

King Stropharia is one of the easiest mushrooms to grow in outdoors beds.  It is a delicious mushroom with a mild, earthy flavour. When young, Wine Cap mushrooms can be eaten with the stem and offer a tender yet crunchy texture when lightly cooked in oil.

  • Location: Wine cap sawdust spawn is only recommended for growing in outdoor beds or top-fruiting containers.Select a spot that will receive indirect sunlight, but Wine Cap does best in partial shade but can tolerate some direct sun. You can have wine cap beds in existing plant or vegetable garden,or under bush or trees, as they benefit each other. You can use shade cloth to provide some shade.
  • Substrate : Hardwood chips, sawdust, straw, coconut coir agricultural byproducts such as rice or bean hulls, corn stalks, etc.Spawn on straw colonise very quickly, while the beds will not last as long as when they are composed of wood chips.Ideally, you combine wood chips and sawdust, straw or agricultural byproducts. New substrate can be added each year to maintain the health of the bed.
  • How big is the patch? This 1.5 kg spawn can inoculate 1-1.5 square meters.
  • Cultivation method: Clear the ground by removing weeds. No need to dig a trench, but the bed should be in contact with the soil. and lay out  some substrate.Break up the Wine Cap sawdust spawn and sprinkle a fine layer of spawn evenly across the bed.Repeat until all of spawn is used, and top off with  some compost (1-3 cm thick)and cover with straw to stop being dry and provide some shade for popping mushrooms.
  • Maintenance:Wine Cap beds require little maintenance. The key is to keep the substrate moisturised. For the first a few days, water with a garden sprinkler. Subsequently, make sure the patch receives a good watering every few days.During dry periods, the bed can be watered but do not over-water, as excessive watering can suffocate the mycelia.
  • How long does it to fruit and how long it last: Wine Cap can fruit in as little as two months, up to eight months and will produce in the same bed for several years.
  • Storing: Use it when it is fully or almost fully colonised. Keep it in dark if it is hasn’t fully colonised.Once it is fully colonised If you don’t plan to use immediately, refrigerate your  wine Cap sawdust spawn. Use within 6 months of receipt.
